Newt Gingrich Suggests Attacking Rest Of 'Axis Of Evil' (VIDEO)

Of course Gingrich has no intention of going to fight himself or sending his kids. Bush was not right in 2002, as Gingrich stated, there was no Axis of Evil ten and there is not one now. What there is are rouge states that do not need to be removed by the US but by the concerted efforts of the United Nations. Had we taken a different approach to both countries we would not be in the position we are in today. Bush antagonized the world with his "with us or against us" rhetoric. He made the world a much more dangerous place then it was and we will feel the repercussions of that for a long time.

But the last thing we need to do is invade another country. Gingrich and his ilk are just trying to keep the "Long War" going as long as they can. There is no rational reason for invading other than to keep pumping money into the military industrial complex. The same military industrial complex that we were supposed to get a peace dividend from after the fall o the Soviet Union.

Gulf Oil Spill: BP Says Time For 'Scaleback' Of Cleanup Efforts

How can there be a scale back of the clean-up? What about all the oil that is floating under the surface, what about the oil that has sunk to the bottom? "Diluted and out of sight does not mean benign," NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco said. "But in those concentrations there will be minimal impact to the big things that are out in the ocean, big fish, big marine mammals, birds." This is missing the point. The ecological damage will be done at the bottom of the food chain. This will work it way up through the food chain concentrating t higher and higher levels until that food reaches our plates.

No, BP cannot be allowed to scale back the clean-up. They will have to change what and how they are cleaning up the mess they made.

Scientists Find Evidence That Oil And Dispersant Mix Is Making Its Way Into The Foodchain

What we will "see" from this disaster in not the surface impact of oil on beaches and estuaries, but the log term impact of the ecological destruction of marine life in the Gulf. It may not even be the reduction of species, but the biological devastation that will leave the fish and shellfish inedible for decades as these chemicals reside on the Gulf floor and in the water column.

Anthony Weiner Goes Ballistic At GOP For Killing 9/11 Responders Health Care Bill (VIDEO)

Erin Burnett: 'Everyone's Talking About' How We Should Extend Bush Tax Cuts To Wealthiest Americans

Not only should the tax cuts that were enacted in 2001 b allowed to expire, but the tax cuts that were made under Reagan should be ended. Those cuts reduced the top rate from 70% down to 38%. When the rich have that much more disposable income they have to find ways to have it make more money. Rather than have in invested in long term growth, they decided to invest it in short term growth. That means that we have seen several major recessions and bubbles, diminishing the value of middle class incomes, increasing the budget deficit, and leading to the off shoring of American jobs.

Lets return to the prosperity of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Return the top tax rate to 90%, and make corporations pay their fail share of taxes. Exxon paid a paultry $46 million dollars on $15.6 billion in profits for 2009. That is well below 1%, and they are not the only company that did not contribute their fair share.

9/11 Responder Aid Package Fails In House

"GOP critics branded the bill as yet another big-government "massive new entitlement program" that would have increased taxes and possibly kill jobs."

What happened to United We Stand? Is that just the standard tough talk from Republicans, the same chicken hawks that are willing to send our military to war, yet never having served themselves? Every Congressman that voted against this bill should have to spend 1 day per week in the wards that are treating these people for th health issued they developed from responding to 9/11.

Sarah Palin Hits Obama For 'View' Appearance

Obama was asked some really softball types of questions, the type Palin can't seem to answer without having notes written on her hands. Palin's answer to the "border crisis" is to build a wall and create concentration camps before deporting these people. However, this will never solve the problem. If we do not fine the companies and prosecuting the management as allowed under the current law, we will never end illegal immigration.

Arizona Immigration Law: Court Ruling A Warning To Other States

U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton is correct in that immigration is a federal responsibility. If the laws on the books were enforced, corporate officers and small business owners would be arrested with the illegal aliens during these raid. When the companies are punished for hiring illegals, there are penalties for each illegal hired and jail time for corporate officers already on the books, then the jobs would stop. When there are no jobs, illegal alien ill not be crossing the boarders. You may even see them leaving the country looking for work to the south.

The states do not have to get involved in immigration. We just have to stop protecting corporations and their management from prosecution.

Obama Takes On Teachers Unions, Insists On Performance Standards

But where are these schools failing. Is it in Greenwich CT, or out in the Hamptons or any other well o do area of the country. No. it is the areas were there is poor economic growth, where drugs and violence are prevalent, and unemployment is high.

I agree, teachers should have some accountability, continuing education and re-certification. They should also be compensated for the work they do and not have to spend money from their pockets to by books or supplies for their classroom.

If were are to fix the education system in this country, we will have to establish national standards for education and testing, preferably without multiple guess testing. We will have to fix the housing and employment prospect in those poor neighborhoods. Students will have to feel safe and get the attention they need to get ahead. It may mean smaller classrooms for inner city kids for the next generation, an infrastructure rebuilding program to improve roads, sewers and data lines. This old provide an increase in employment and security to those areas.

The answer will not be with just making teacher accountable. The issue is complex and will take effort and money on the part of the tax payers to fix. We will have to have regulations and enforcement of those regulations to ensure that money is spent wisely. Of course that will be hard to do when Republicans feel that government is the problem. But the market has yet to fix education.

Why Higher Capital Standards Are Needed

The banking lobby argues that any increase in capital requirements would limit lending and slow global growth. As opposed to the unlimited lending that is going on now. What is happening now is the hoarding of funds, much of which was generated from TARP and the no interest lending this is provided by the Fed.

Increased capital requirements would mean that the FDIC would not have to replace a percentage of the GDP is one of the six major banks should fail, taking it depositors money with it.

Veterans Funding Passes With Overwhelming Majority As Republicans Abandon Tough Talk On Voting Against Spending

Rather than trying to make the country better, improving border security, energy development (renewable), jobs and unemployment, Republicans have sought to force Democrats to cast politically difficult votes. They are only trying o take a political position that will help them get elected and nothing more. What they will do is continue to cut the budget that has anything o do with real people, while reducing corporate and the rich's taxes. Of course, these tax cuts will be offset by the reduction in services and tax increases to the middle class and the poor.

International Republican Institute's Use Of U.S. Grants Criticized By Watchdog

One of the problems with republican run government is their disregard for government. By under funding government agencies they attempt to prove that government doesn't work. Of course government cannot work if the agencies that provide regulatory over site are underfunded.

The International Republican, which is chaired by Sen McCain, receives government funds. But the audit of those funds show that the IRI has spent their money questionably. The audit also blamed the State Department for "lax oversight" and "incomplete knowledge of regulations" in allowing "a number of erroneous decisions to continue unchecked."

Further, it seems that this group has also solicited moneys for the same defense contractors that are under investigation and over site by the same Senator's committee. yet he has never recused himself from those investigations. Again, this is a similar patter for Republicans, most notably Justice Scalia, who has refused to recuse himself from cases in front of the Supreme Court which he or his wife has had an interest in.

It seems to me that the State Department should consider cutting funds to this organization until it reimburses them for this mismanagement of funds. Further, the sitting Senators on this committee should be investigated by the Senate's ethics panel.

Subway Fare Increases, MetroCard Changes In The Works

The MTA is also asking the Union to take pay reductions, yet there is no call for a similar reduction on the part on management. If the management cannot break even, maybe they need to not be compensated as well as they are.

There are abuses on both sides, with union workers getting paid a full rate while being "on call" at work, and MTA executives getting lifetime passes from bridge, tunnel, and rail transit. When calls for workers to take pay cuts go out, whatever the workers decide to take, management should have to take the exact same percentage cut in their salary.

Just How Far Is the "Ground Zero Mosque" From Ground Zero?

One of the first Arab-American enclaves in New York City was located on Washington St. in lower Manhattan - the very area in which the World Trade Center was later built. Founded by Arabic-speaking Christians and Muslims from Ottoman Syria in the 1880s, it was called Little Syria.

The heart of Little Syria was full of outdoor cafes where non-Arab visitors sometimes gawked at men smoking hookahs and trading gossip about the Ottoman Empire. In a 1903 article, the New York Times called the neighborhood "quaint," noting the "uniform politeness" of its inhabitants.

Lower Manhattan is also the final resting place of Muslims and other Africans, often slaves, who were forcibly resettled in New York when it was still New Amsterdam. The African Burial Ground, discovered in 1991, is six blocks away from the proposed Muslim community center. Scholars continue to debate the religious identity of the hundreds buried there, but the fact that some of the dead wore shrouds and were interred with strings of blue beads, frequently used as Islamic talismans, suggests Muslim were among the enslaved people who helped build Manhattan into a bustling city.

Harry Reid: New Energy And Oil Bill Draft Unveiled, Less Sweeping Than Failed Climate Legislation

It is unfortunate the this new bill does not have a provision for renewable electricity standard, nor funding for getting more renewable energy installed on homes (solar panels and wind generation). I do not lament the loss of cap and trade as that would only make a gambling house out of energy and lead to an Enron type bubble that would leave the country completely bankrupt except for the rich.

What we need is an energy policy that stops subsidizing fossil fuels and starts subsidizing renewable energy at the fossil fuel rate. We need incentives for energy production to be made closer to home with credits given to homeowner that install wind turbines and solar panels that return excess energy to the grid.

We need an energy policy that makes American business invest in America not overseas. Placing a tax on carbon transportation would help to level the playing field. Rather than imposing an import tariff, tax the carbon that is needed to bring imports to this country. Make the importing companies, not the country of origin responsible for that tax. If the importers have to pay the tax, they will start to look for locally sourced products. American business will see that there is a need to locally produce and bring these jobs back to the US.

Consumer Confidence Falls As Corporate Profits Rise

What the Republicans have done is not enforce regulations, gut government budgets so that there are not enough people to actually check on whether the regulations are being followed. The Neither Bush nor McCain would have dealt with it other than to cut more taxes for the rich and the corporations, money that would have to be made up by increasing the taxes on the middle class and small business. Hillary would have done just what Obama has done since her people are the ones providing direction to Obama with their triangulation strategy, and we can see how well that has worked.

No, there is not socialism in this country. If you understood what socialism is, you would not make such a uninformed remark. The people do not control the means of production and they are loosing control of the commons to corporations every time the right wing Supreme Court makes a decision. This is how fascism starts. Consumer Confidence Falls As Corporate Profits Rise

Barack Obama, who was left with the largest deficit in history, two wars, neither of which was paid for and were being kept off the actual budget, which he put on the budget, the TARP program that was supposed to buy the bad mortgages but was used by the Sec. Treasury to give loans to the big banks, a tax cut to the wealthy that cost the government $1.2 trillion with no offset that the Republicans now demand for any new spending, and a Medicaid benefit that was not paid for and left the government paying full retail for prescriptions without the ability to negotiate prices.

The guy in charge of consumer confidence was left with a bag of sh*t from the Republicans intentional mishandling of the economy. It has been their plan since Reagan was in office to do everything they can to dismantle the government and put business in charge, while making it look like it is all the Democrats fault. Nevada's Economic Misery May Be America's Future

I know that in my town, the banks are required to pay property and school tax. My bank has done it for 3 years years on my house and they have tried to foreclose on my property because of it. The town is required to take the first payment they receive. The economy is not getting better, and people like myself, over 45, are finding it harder and harder to find work. I have been looking for almost a year and a half.

If we do not return to the regulations we had prior to 1980 with regard to banking and investing, we will always be subject to this type of economic disaster. Banks should have to show that 45% of their lending is in their community; banks should not be allowed to own investment houses or insurance companies; interest only loans should be illegal; and interest rate more tan 5 points above prime should be illegal.

Capital gains should be for actual investing and not gambling. Capital gains taxes should start at 60% for less than 1 year investment and graduate down to 15% for a 10 year investment. That is the only way we can ensure that we have a strong and stable economy. If Republicans think that it will cause capital flight then tax the movement of money that laves the country.

'Duch' Kaing Guek Eav, Khmer Rouge Jailer, Found Guilty Of War Crimes

I find it amazing how much words are thrown about by the press. Mcdowell seems o think that the Khmer Rouge was actually ultra-communist. The Khmer Rouge had nothing to do with communism. They were just a group of thugs that wanted to control a people through force, terror tactics, indiscriminate killing, and the intentional killing of its opposition. Maybe if Mr. Mcdowell actually read the Communist Manifesto, he would understand that both Marx and Engles would be angry that any country could claim it is communist.

That being said, Kaing Guek Eav should have to spend the rest of his days in jail for what he did. His actions and those of the Khmer Rouge were inexcusable under any reasoning. Those people that were in positions of authority and ordered those killing or did nothing to stop them should not be allowed out of prison ever.

America's Growing 'Cultural Generation Gap' Between Whites And Nonwhites

When Don McLeroy, a member of the Texas Board of Education, stated: "The key thing that I wanted to make sure was for our kids to understand what makes America an exceptional place," he thought that his legislation would ensure tat there would not be ethnic chauvinism in the classroom. In fat that is just what he is creating. The reason that the soon to be majority see the government as the best chance for their children to get ahead, is that they see the government as a leveler of the plying field in an increasingly economically divided country. They can see that corporations are taking over, that the rich are getting richer while everyone else gets poorer.

We can only hope that they do not become seduced by the same forces that turned America from a country that worked to help those less fortunate (see Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid) into one that thinks that Gordon Gekko's mantra of "greed is good" is the way they should live thier lives.

Afghanistan War Logs: WikiLeaks Releasing Over 90,000 Documents In 'Afghan War Diary'

This generation's Pentagon Papers. What WikiLeaks Afghan War Diary shows is how mis-managed the war was under the bush Administration. It shows not only the ineptitude of the administration but also their hubris. Had they turned their flag waving into actionable ideas, followed the State Departments plans for "nation building", we would not be in a long war. However, that was the true intention of this conflict. The longer we have to fight, the longer we feed the military industrial complex, the same group that so heavily supports the Republicans with campaign dollars.

There can be no white washing by the government over this leak. It was done with the obvious intent to change the war, to get the US to finally put this conflict to bed and go home. The only strategy to end the fighting left is to dump 100K combat soldiers into the country plus support personnel or leave. Americans are pretty much done with this war, so public opinion would be to leave.

What truly need to happen is that the War Powers Act needs to be rewritten. The President should not loose his ability to send soldiers into combat, rather, by 90 days he would have to provide sworn testimony that the conflict needs to continue. Congress would have to vote just yea or nay. If they votes nay, troops would have to be out withing 30 days. If they vote yea, the draft would automatically start within 30 days. Thus ends useless intervention.

Education Department Proposes To End Federal Funding To For-Profit Colleges Whose Students Can't Get Jobs Or Repay Their Loans

These "colleges" have been around forever. Many of them started out as correspondents schools. Those schools did so poorly at training anyone that they evolved into the tech schools. These schools set up their own accreditation programs to legitimize their education. Some decided to become 2 year and then 4 year colleges as the student loan programs were expanded over the years without regard to the quality of the education given.

Although the rules do not go far enough (55% of students not being able to pay down the principle), it is a start. At least in the future it could be re-evaluated to see if the rules are making changes in how colleges do. If there is little or no improvement, the rule could be strengthened or the Department of education could set up criteria for accreditation.

Thomas Pain and the Right

Thomas Paine

Misunderstood By:

Libertarians, Glenn Beck.

Glenn Beck has recently found a soul mate in Thomas Paine, the Founding Father known for his Revolutionary War tract Common Sense. So much so that he's gone so far as to rewrite Common Sense for the modern era, essentially stuffing words hand over fist into the mouth of a centuries-dead political philosopher for the soul-shriveling disgust Beck knows Paine would feel about Barack Obama.

Libertarians and tea partiers are so enamored by their new ideological BFF that they've taken to dressing up like him on YouTube and spouting off about the evils of taxation, weak foreign policy and too many brown people.

But Beck and his minions could probably benefit from actually reading some Thomas Paine. The guy whose 17th century ghost waxes emotional about 9/11 and congressional pay raises on the Internet is also responsible for these ideas:

"Pay as a remission of taxes to every poor family, out of the surplus taxes, and in room of poor-rates, four pounds a year for every child under fourteen years of age." Thomas Paine, The Rights of Man.

Huh, that sounds like the child tax credit created under the Balanced Budget Act of 1997, signed by. . .

"It is painful to see old age working itself to death, in what are called civilised countries, for daily bread... pay to every such person of the age of fifty years ... the sum of six pounds per annum out of the surplus taxes, and ten pounds per annum during life after the age of sixty... This support, as already remarked, is not of the nature of a charity but of a right." Thomas Paine, The Rights of Man.

An entitlement paying old people to support them for not working? That sounds like Social Security, passed by...

"There could be no such thing as landed property originally. Man did not make the earth, and, though he had a natural right to occupy it, he had no right to locate as his property in perpetuity any part of it." Thomas Paine, Agrarian Justice.

It almost sounds like he's about to say we should all share in the wealth or somethi-

"Create a national fund, out of which there shall be paid to every person, when arrived at the age of twenty-one years, the sum of fifteen pounds sterling, as a compensation in part, for the loss of his or her natural inheritance, by the introduction of the system of landed property." Thomas Paine, Agrarian Justice.

Holy shit! That sounds a lot like...

It was and is his job to change the the discussion from the racism of the Tea Party or whatever the discussion is about the republicans and the Right, to make it seems as if the Democrats and the left are just as bad if not worse. Once they put out this cr@ap, they get the MSM to focus on something else besides what the issue should be, They take the spot light off the disaster that is the Tea Party and their real backers and the Right in general.

Pentagon Child Porn Scandal: Security Agencies Were Left At Risk, Investigators Say

This is reason to not have contractors in sensitive government positions. National defense and intelligence should be handled by government employees. Why we pay for people that get higher salaries and think that this saves us money is beyond me. We are always going to find these people in every business because that is the make-up of society in general. What we need is better methods of controlling what these people do while at work. You have little chance of controlling what they do at home. Maybe it is time that they change the child pornography laws to reflect the intent of displaying children and not just the fact that they are children, because that is what these people are looking for.

"When one of the contractors was indicted two years ago, he fled the country and is believed to be hiding in Libya, according to a summary of the investigation from last year". Since this investigation was initiated by an ICE operation, how does someone flee the country. Can we not communicate between agencies ever? Because of a lack of communication we ended up with 9/11. Now we have an NSA contractor leaving with sensitive knowledge of our intelligence operation living in Libya.

Obama Blames Media For His Administration's Firing Of Shirley Sherrod

Obama is right in saying that the "media culture" is to blame (partially). I am sure that when nthe full interview is played on GMA we will see that the intent of the message ws altered to help boost those ratings prior to the showing.

That being said, it is very likely that Vilsack fired Ms Sherrod without the White House knowing and that left them to scramble. Everyone is under pressure when the press reports something without doing their own fact checks. Now I do not expect Faux to every fact check. However, the other parts of the MSM should have, and I am including the press and HP in that. It would have been easy for the USDA to put Ms Sherrod on Administrative leave while it investigated, and that would have diffused the right from its talking point.

So let's get back to what this whole "story" was all about. The reason for this clip and the way it was edited was to stop accusations of racism by the Tea Party. It worked. No one in the press or here at HP is talking bout it. All we are focused on is this issue about Ms Sherrod. So Faux and the right really won, they did their job and re-directed attention away from themselves and on to Democrats. Unemployment Extension Bill Clears Hurdle, Standoff Likely Over Until November

When the Bush tax cuts lapse, they will pay for this extension and the next, and the next after that if necessary. Had the Republicans not enacted this tax cut, the deficit and the economy would be in better shape. Not until we address the inequity of tax laws that favor the rich over the middle class and the poor will we be able to address the economy and investments in any meaningful way.

When you make $250K and you get a 10% tax cut, that affects you more than the person that make $25K. Your portion of disposable income is so much more than the middle class person that you have to find ways to use that money. This tends to cause people to take more risks with their investments in order to make bigger gains. The middle class guy does not have that kind of luxury. They are worried more about surviving, yet they work just as hard as the rich person, they just don't get compensated the same.

David Leonhardt: Climate Bill, Like The Country, Overcome By Heat And Inertia

How about if the carbon tax was framed as a job creator. That taxing carbon would increase the price of foreign made goods and that American companies would then be able to compete for those products, bringing jobs back here. That there would be less waste in our economy because food would end up being grown closer to th consumer, rather than being trucked all across the country. How about making it profitable for power companies to install solar panels on homes, thereby reducing the cost to the consumer for their energy usage. Yes I know that it would be better if the people owned their own solar panels, but most people do not have the capital for that investment, even with the tax breaks.

The problem starts with how national defense strategy is developed. As a COST cutting measure, many functions of the military have been shifted to the National Guard and Reserves. Because these men and women are not full time, their benefits are limited and the cost of employing them is less (one weekend per month, two weeks for annual training). I have been part of all three, Active duty, National Guard & Reserves. The latter two do not receive the same QUALITY training as active duty just because of the time factor. Further, their service time counts differently, especially for the National Guard. They also do not have the same quality equipment. During the build up and initial combat, Guard and Reserve units saw their equipment sent overseas to replace damaged equipment, while the manufacturers built up production. This new production went to combat units first before backfilling Guard and Reserve units. They work for the state government except for their two weeks of annual training or if they have been federalized. Therefore they are treated differently as to what benefits they get and when they can use them. Guard and Reserve personnel do not get their pension until they reach 65 years old. However, active duty personnel get theirs when they have served 20 years and leave the service. Guard and reserve personnel do not get they same VA benefits as do active duty personnel unless they have served during a declared war. The federal government owes this benefit.

The Real Reason Geithner Is Afraid of Elizabeth Warren

John Talbot is right about Geithner and Summers, they are out to protect the banks and their corporate executives and boards. Warren is probably the most feared person on Capital Hill. I just signed the petition and sent it to about 50 people. Maybe it will make a difference, I don't know. But if I don't try...

The Bush Revival: How Jeb, Rove, Gillespie Are Leading The GOP Again

First off Jeb is not W. He is intelligent, and more of a traditional Republican. What gives him the advantage as a Republican is the disarray within the RNC and the Party itself. However, 4 years of a Republican government will cement the destruction of the middle class.

Simon Johnson: A Roosevelt Moment for America's Megabanks?

Somehow, somewhere Obama lost the bully pulpit. Maybe it was his advisors, or the press over his frequent discussions with the people, interfering with inane profit making TV programing. He has not put his stamp behind anything except the continued TARP legislation and the stimulus package. He did not throw his weight behind health care, financial reform, or unemployment. TR would not have backed down from the press or big business. FDR never let the press dictate to him what to do and went on the radio (the major medium of the day) constantly. Until Obama decides he wants to be a leader again, he will drift into ineffectiveness and become irrelevant.

The Future Of Finance: International Edition

Simon Johnson in this instance is both right and wrong. Glass-Steagall proved effective for over 60 years in protecting the financial markets from destroying themselves. The S&L crisis was created when those banks were deregulated with regards to providing loans to people not members of that bank. The derivatives market developed as a way to get rid of all of those bad loans and even though the man i charge or restructuring the S&L's said that derivatives should be regulated, the government never did, giving rise to the current crisis especially when Glass-Steagall was revoked.

So, first off, for this country, Glass-Steagall needs to be re-instated and all derivatives need to be in a regulated exchange. Then there needs to be a mechanism for international cooperation in making this type of regulated financial markets the standard for all nations.

Of course the banks will spend billions to avoid being good corporate citizens so that they can steall money from people without risk on their prt or that of their executives.

Sue Myrick's Latest Conspiracy Theory Is Like The Plot Of A Bad Movie

To quote a prominent Muslim scholar, Sheik Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, states:

“Islam denounces excesses in beautifying oneself when it alters the physical features that Allah created him with. The Glorious Qur'an considers such alterations as inspired by Satan, who "...will command them (his devotees) to change what Allah has created...” (An-Nisa': 119)

Therefore, any of these people she is talking about are not religious fanatics but rather secular agents. So it cannot be that Islam is to blame. Maybe the Congresswomen and other "city on the hill' freaks should get some education before they open their mouths, especially when cameras maybe present.

Dems See Hope Without Brown, Will Bring DISCLOSE Act To Floor

I still find it amazing that with the Democratic majority they can't pass legislation. What needs to happen is that these Blue Dogs need to be run out of the party. They are merely Republicans in sheep's clothing, lurking in the corridors looking for ways to keep the government from protecting the people from corporations and their money.

Utah Illegal Immigration List: Investigators Examining Records For Origins Of List Terrorizing Immigrants

So where is the list companies that are hiring these people? When will the police go after those that hire day workers paying them cash and not paying income taxes. There would be NO illegal immigration if there were NO jobs for these people. When we stop the source of the jobs, employers, we stop illegal immigration. But what politician has the stone to go after the small business guy or the large corporation to end this tragedy? I say there are none.
